How does one product appear in each system?
Consider a jacket sold in several colours and markets.
The PIM holds the SKU, material, care instructions, available sizes, colour names, product description and market-specific attributes. It can send that information to the brand’s ecommerce platform and marketplace listings.
The DAM holds the studio photography, lifestyle images, colour variants, video, social crops and campaign artwork. It records which files are approved, which markets can use them and whether a newer version has replaced them.

When should a retail team start with a PIM?
A PIM is the stronger starting point when product data is the main source of errors or manual work.
Common signs include inconsistent specifications across channels, repeated entry of the same attributes, incomplete marketplace records and difficulty managing regional or language versions. A PIM is also useful when a large or frequently changing catalogue must meet different channel schemas.
The decision should be based on workflow complexity rather than a fixed SKU threshold. A smaller catalogue with complex technical attributes may need a PIM sooner than a larger catalogue with simple, stable product data.
When should a retail team start with a DAM?
A DAM is the stronger starting point when teams struggle to find, approve or distribute product and marketing files.
Typical symptoms include uncertainty about the approved product image, duplicate creative files, agency handoffs that disappear into shared drives, unclear usage rights and repeated requests for the same marketplace or campaign assets.
A DAM also supports content beyond the product record. Seasonal campaigns, brand templates, social creative and store signage may relate to several products or to no individual SKU at all.

When do retailers need both PIM and DAM?
Both systems become useful when the business has meaningful complexity in product data and digital assets. This often happens when a retailer operates across several markets, languages, brands, marketplaces or store formats.
The PIM remains the source for product information. The DAM remains the source for approved files. An integration connects the records and helps send the correct data and assets to each channel.
Before buying both, define the ownership model. Duplicating every product field in the DAM or every creative detail in the PIM creates conflicting records. Share the identifiers and the information needed for the integration, while keeping each system responsible for its core content.
Can a PIM store images?
Many PIM platforms can attach images to product records. That may be enough when the image set is small and the workflow is simple.
A DAM becomes more useful when files need creative review, version history, rights management, advanced search, transformation or reuse across campaigns and stores. The question is not whether a PIM can hold an image. It is whether it can support the full lifecycle that image follows.
Can a DAM store product information?
A DAM can store product IDs and selected attributes as metadata. Those fields help users find assets and connect them to product records.
It is not usually designed to validate, enrich and syndicate a complete product catalogue. If teams need to manage detailed specifications, attribute completeness and channel-specific data feeds, that work belongs in a PIM.
How should PIM and DAM connect?
You can start with a shared product identifier. Decide which system owns each field, which events should trigger an update and which channels receive the combined output.
A common flow might look like this:
The PIM creates or maintains the product record.
The product ID is available in the DAM.
Images and video are uploaded, reviewed and approved in the DAM.
Approved asset references return to the product record.
Product data and assets are published to the relevant channels.
