Choose a digital asset management (DAM) system by first identifying the problems you need it to solve, such as slow file searches, duplicate assets, approval bottlenecks, inconsistent branding, or unclear usage rights.
Next, evaluate the features that matter most to your team. Look for strong search, flexible metadata, version control, role-based permissions, and integrations with the creative, marketing, and business tools you already use.
Ease of use is also critical. A DAM only delivers value if marketing, creative, sales, and external partners can adopt it quickly. Consider security, storage, scalability, implementation support, and total cost, including migration and training.
Before making a decision, ask the vendor to demonstrate the platform using assets similar to the ones your team actually manages, including comparable file types, formats, styles, themes, and volumes (This is super important!). Testing realistic assets and everyday workflows will give you a much better sense of how the DAM will perform in practice. The right system should make it easier to find, manage, share, and control content as your organization grows.
